Fatehābād lies in the Agra district of Uttar Pradesh, southeast of Agra, on the flat, fertile plain of the Yamuna region. From above, the old town is a compact knot of narrow lanes and closely packed buildings, surrounded by main roads, newer neighbourhoods and fields that stretch toward the horizon.
The town's name recalls a decisive moment in Mughal history. Nearby, in 1658, Aurangzeb defeated his brother Dara Shikoh at the Battle of Samugarh during the war of succession for the Mughal throne, and the town was named Fatehabad, meaning roughly city of victory, after the battle.
