Franca sits on high, rolling land in the far north of São Paulo state, near the border with Minas Gerais. The street plan follows the terrain. The historic centre forms a compact grid on higher ground, while neighbourhoods spread across the surrounding hills and dip into the valleys of small streams.
The city is best known as a national centre of men's shoe manufacturing, with many factories, workshops and leather businesses. It also has a strong basketball tradition, and its teams have won national championships over several decades.
