Lake Lanier shoreline
The reservoir's many coves and branching arms create an intricate, almost fractal edge along the city, the most striking and recognisable feature of any map of Gainesville.

Gainesville Map Poster & Print
Gainesville is the seat of Hall County in the foothills of north Georgia, and its map is dominated by Lake Lanier, the large reservoir that curls around the northern and western sides of the city. The lake's shoreline branches into countless coves and inlets, creating a lacework of water that contrasts with the more regular streets of town.
The historic downtown is centred on a square with blocks of older commercial buildings around it, while newer development follows highways and ridge roads outward. Rail lines pass through the city, and residential neighbourhoods fill the hilly ground between the lake arms and the major roads.
Gainesville has long been known as a centre of the poultry industry and is often called the poultry capital of the world. The city was also struck by a devastating tornado in 1936 and rebuilt its downtown afterward. A Gainesville map poster traces the city and the intricate lake edge that defines it.

Downtown square
The historic centre gathers around a square with a tight grid of blocks nearby, a small, orderly core from which the rest of the city spreads outward along highways.
Ridge and hollow roads
Outside downtown, streets follow the rolling foothill terrain, curving along ridges and down toward the lake, giving the residential areas an organic, irregular pattern.
