Gandu is a town in the south of Bahia, inland from the Atlantic coast in a landscape of green hills, streams and farmland. On a map it appears as a narrow cluster of streets that follows the lie of the valley, with roads leaving along the lower ground and the countryside closing in on all sides.
The surrounding region is largely agricultural, and the hills around the town are covered with farms, plantations and remnants of forest. Gandu serves as a local centre for smaller communities nearby, with shops, schools and services gathered in its compact centre.
