Gaziantep sits on a broad plateau in southeastern Turkey, near the Syrian border, and its map grows outward from a single ancient point: the castle mound at the centre of the old town. Around it lie the twisting lanes of historic neighbourhoods and covered bazaars, and beyond them the city expands in broad modern districts with wide avenues and large apartment blocks.
The Alleben stream, once a water source for the old town, runs through the centre in a green corridor of parks. Major boulevards and ring roads encircle the expanding city, which is divided mainly between the districts of Şahinbey and Şehitkamil. Around the edges, fields and pistachio orchards meet the newest streets.
Gaziantep is known across Turkey for its cuisine, especially baklava and the pistachios grown in the surrounding region, and it is a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
