General Mosconi lies in the far north of Salta province, along the national road that runs up toward the Bolivian border. The town forms a tidy block grid, typical of northern Argentine settlements, set against two contrasting landscapes. The flat, wooded Chaco plain extends to the east, and the first ridges of the sub-Andean ranges rise to the west.
The town is named after General Enrique Mosconi, the first director of the state oil company YPF, and the name fits. The area's modern growth was tied to oil and gas, and that industrial history is part of its identity.
