Ghatkesar lies on the eastern side of Hyderabad, where the metropolitan area gives way to open Deccan land. On the map it is defined by transport lines. The highway towards Warangal passes through, the railway to Warangal runs alongside, and the Outer Ring Road circles past with a large interchange that makes the town a gateway to the city.
Around these lines, the street pattern is a mix of older village roads and new layouts. The newer residential colonies show as neat rectangles of plots that are often only partly built on, while campuses and industrial sites fill larger blocks. Rocky Deccan outcrops and water tanks break up the spaces between them.
