Goris sits in a valley in Syunik province, in the far south of Armenia. From above, the town is unusual for the region: its centre follows a regular grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks, laid out in the late nineteenth century. The grid contrasts sharply with the steep, folded hills that close in on every side.
Above the town are the cliffs of Old Goris, where erosion has shaped the volcanic rock into pillars and cones. For centuries people carved dwellings into the soft stone. A river runs through the valley floor, and the town's stone houses are a familiar image of Syunik.
