Guerou lies in the Assaba region of southern Mauritania, in the dry Sahel belt between the Sahara to the north and the savanna further south. The town sits on the main road that runs east from Nouakchott across the south of the country, and that road forms the backbone of the settlement.
From above, Guerou is a loose arrangement of streets and walled compounds on flat, sandy ground. The layout is broadly regular, with blocks set out on either side of the highway, but the edges of town fade gradually into open land. Dry watercourses and scattered vegetation mark the surrounding terrain.
