Contour-following roads
Roads curve and switch back as they climb the surrounding hills, drawing loose, looping lines that are characteristic of the Chongqing countryside.

Guocun Map Poster & Print
Guocun lies in the northeast of Chongqing Municipality, a region of steep hills, deep valleys and terraced fields. In such terrain flat ground is scarce, and the town's streets have had to adapt, bending with the contours and squeezing onto the valley floor. The result is a map shaped as much by the land as by planning.
Like many smaller towns in the municipality, it serves as a local centre for the surrounding villages, with markets, schools and services concentrated along its main streets. New construction often lines the roads leading out of town, stretching the built-up area along the valleys in long, narrow shapes.
A Guocun map poster shows a place defined by its terrain. The winding roads and irregular outline are far from the neat grid of a planned city, and that is what makes it interesting to look at, and meaningful for those who know how each curve fits the hillside.

Valley-floor streets
The densest part of the town sits on the limited level ground, where streets are packed tightly together before the terrain rises again.
Terraced hillsides
Around the town the slopes are shaped by cultivation, and on the map they read as wide open areas crossed only by narrow paths and minor roads.
