Gurmatkāl is a town in Yadgir district, in the north-east of Karnataka, close to the border with Telangana. It sits on the Deccan plateau, where broad, gently rolling land is dotted with granite outcrops, irrigation tanks and fields of dryland crops. From above, the town has a compact centre, and roads fan out from it across this open country.
The street pattern is dense in the middle, with lanes and small blocks built up over generations. It is looser toward the edges, where newer houses follow the roads outward.
