Hachimantai lies in the northwest of Iwate Prefecture, in a landscape of volcanic mountains, high plateaus and river valleys. On a map, the city is less a single town than a set of settlements spread along valleys, joined by roads that thread between forested slopes and open upland.
The city takes its name from Mount Hachimantai, whose summit plateau is known for marshes, crater lakes and autumn colours. The Aspite Line, a scenic mountain road, crosses the heights toward Akita, and the area around Appi Kogen is one of Japan's well-known ski resorts.
