Haftkel lies in the north-eastern part of Khuzestan province in south-western Iran, where the plain begins to rise into the foothills of the Zagros. The town is closely tied to the oil field that shares its name, one of the early fields developed in the country during the first half of the twentieth century.
Towns built around oil operations often have a more deliberate plan than older market towns, and on a map Haftkel shows regular blocks and straight streets alongside looser, later growth. The surrounding land is dry and folded, and roads and tracks thread through it toward wells and neighbouring settlements.
