Hanawa lies in the Kazuno area of northern Akita, inside a basin ringed by forested mountains. The town stretches along the valley floor, with its streets following the course of the river and the railway rather than a planned grid. On a map, the built-up area forms a long, narrow shape.
The mountains around the basin leave large empty areas on the poster, which makes the fine lines of the town stand out. Small side roads lead up into the valleys, and rice fields fill much of the flat ground between the houses and the river.
