Harrow spreads across northwest London as a pattern of suburban streets, parades and railway lines, much of it built in the early twentieth century as the Metropolitan line opened up the area. On the map, curving residential roads fill the flat ground, broken up by parks, golf courses and playing fields.
In the middle rises Harrow on the Hill, a steep hill topped by the medieval church of St Mary's, whose spire can be seen for miles. On the slopes below lies Harrow School, founded in the sixteenth century, with its buildings and sports fields spreading across the hill.
