Hashtpar is the capital of Talesh County in Gilan Province, in the far north of Iran. The town lies on the narrow coastal plain along the western shore of the Caspian Sea, with the forested Talysh mountains rising to the west, and on the map it appears as a band of streets between the hills and the sea.
The region is known for its mild, humid climate, green landscapes and rice fields, very different from the dry interior of Iran. Rivers descending from the mountains cross the plain toward the Caspian, and the town's streets follow the main coastal road that connects settlements along the shore.
Hashtpar is also a centre of the Talysh people, who have their own language and cultural traditions.
