Hautmont lies in the far north of France, on the Sambre river close to Maubeuge and the Belgian border. From above, the river is the main feature. It winds through town in broad curves, with streets packed onto the land between the bends and rail lines cutting straight across the meanders.
The town grew with heavy industry in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, especially metalworking. Its layout still reflects that: large riverside plots once used by works and yards, rows of workers' housing, and a centre that feels practical rather than grand.
