Heanor stands on high ground in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, close to the Nottinghamshire border. The town centre sits on a hilltop, and from above its streets fan out down the slopes, with long rows of terraced houses following the contours.
Heanor grew in the nineteenth century with coal mining and hosiery, and the map still shows the pattern of that era: dense terraces, small industrial sites and short streets packed tightly together. Later housing estates spread out beyond them, forming more curving layouts toward the edges.
