Hedge End lies on the eastern edge of Southampton in Hampshire, close to the M27. From above it is mostly residential: winding avenues, closes and crescents built out from an older village core, with large retail parks near the motorway junction. Green spaces and remnant fields sit between the estates and at the town's edges.
Hedge End grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century, and the map shows it clearly. The loops and cul-de-sacs of modern housing contrast with the few older roads that run through it. The motorway along the northern side gives the composition a firm straight edge.
