Helchteren is the northern part of the municipality of Houthalen-Helchteren in Belgian Limburg. It is smaller and more rural than its southern neighbour, and on a map it appears as a village centre with roads spreading into the countryside. Large areas of heath, pine forest and wet ground dominate the surroundings.
The area is part of the Kempen, a region of sandy soils where heath and conifer plantations long defined the landscape. Much of this land around Helchteren is now protected or used for walking and cycling, and some of it sits alongside military and nature areas, which keeps large parts of the map free of buildings.
