Hlotse is the main town of Leribe District, in the lowlands of northern Lesotho. From above, it sits on the Hlotse River, which winds through the town and joins the Mohokare, or Caledon River, not far to the west. The town is small, with a compact centre and neighbourhoods spreading across gently rising ground.
The Mohokare forms the border with South Africa, and roads from Hlotse lead toward it as well as east into the highlands, where the land rises sharply toward the Maloti mountains. The town is also commonly known as Leribe, after the district. Its landscape is agricultural, with fields and villages surrounding the town.
