Hoàn Lão is a township in central Vietnam, the administrative seat of Bố Trạch district, north of Đồng Hới. The area now belongs to Quảng Trị Province. On a map, the town lies along National Route 1A, the country's main north–south road, and most of its streets branch off this highway. Rice fields, rivers and small villages fill the coastal plain around it.
Central Vietnam narrows here, so the mountains are never far from the coast. Inland, the land rises toward the Annamite range and the Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng National Park, known for its vast limestone caves. Hoàn Lão is one of the towns people pass through on the way there, and the map reflects its role as a crossroads.
