Honglu is a town in the western part of Chongqing Municipality, in the rolling hill country that stretches across the eastern Sichuan Basin. It is a modest place, and on a map it shows less as a grid and more as a cluster of streets that follows the lie of the land.
The terrain around it is typical of this part of China: low, rounded hills, small valleys, reservoirs and ponds, and farmland worked in terraces and irregular plots. Roads rarely run straight for long. Instead they curve along contours and ridgelines to link the town with neighbouring villages and larger centres elsewhere in Chongqing.
