Horasan is a district town in Erzurum province, in the high country of eastern Turkey. It lies near the Aras River, on open plateau land surrounded by mountains. On the map, the town is compact and fairly regular, a block of streets set against wide, lightly marked terrain.
Horasan has long been a crossroads on the routes east from Erzurum. Main roads and the railway line towards Kars pass through the town, and on the map these routes run as long lines across the plateau, meeting at the town before carrying on.
