Hoveyzeh lies in western Khuzestan, near Iran's border with Iraq. The land here is extremely flat. Rivers, irrigation canals and the great Hoor al-Azim wetlands to the west define the landscape far more than any hill or ridge.
The town is historically important in the region and was the seat of a local dynasty centuries ago. In more recent memory, it is known for the heavy fighting it saw during the Iran-Iraq war, when much of it was destroyed and later rebuilt. Its map reflects that reconstruction with broad, regular streets alongside older patterns.
