Hünfeld lies in the Fulda district of eastern Hesse, in the valley of the Haune, a tributary of the Fulda River, between the Rhön and the Knüll hills. It is an old market town, and its compact historic centre is still easy to pick out on a map, with newer neighbourhoods spreading around it.
The railway between Fulda and Bebra runs through the valley here, and roads fan out to surrounding villages across a landscape of fields and wooded hills. Hünfeld is also connected with Konrad Zuse, the computer pioneer who lived in the town and after whom its local museum is named.
