Hưng Yên lies on the left bank of the Red River, south-east of Hanoi, in the flat, fertile land of the delta. The river is the largest feature on the map. It sweeps past the city in a wide curve, and a long dyke runs along its bank to protect the streets from floods. Inland, the city is laid out around lakes and ponds.
In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries this was the site of Phố Hiến, a busy river port where Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and European merchants traded. There's a well-known Vietnamese saying that ranks it second only to the capital in that era. Some temples and pagodas from those times still stand in the old quarter.
Today the province is also known for its longan fruit. A Hưng Yên map poster shows the city between the curve of the river and the grid of fields around it. The lakes add soft, rounded shapes to the plan, and the dyke gives the waterfront a clear, firm edge.
