Huolu lies in the southeastern part of the Chongqing municipality. This is a region of high ridges, deep river valleys and limestone uplands, far from the dense towers of the central city. Towns here grow where the land allows. On a map that means narrow built-up strips along valley floors, with roads that follow the contours instead of cutting across them.
From above, the town's streets gather into a compact core, and the roads leaving it bend sharply as they climb or follow watercourses. Terraced fields and wooded slopes fill much of the area around it, and the pattern of settlement thins quickly past the town edge.
