Icatu lies on the coast of Maranhão, east of São Luís, near the wide estuaries where rivers flow into the Atlantic. It is one of the older settlements in the state, founded during the early colonial period.
The land around the town is low and marked by water. Tidal channels, mangroves and river mouths shape the coastline, and the town sits on firmer ground beside the estuary. The streets are few and simple compared with the complex patterns of water surrounding them.
An Icatu map poster shows a small street network next to a much larger system of waterways. The town's short grid sits on the bank, roads lead inland toward the highway, and winding creeks and mangrove edges fill the rest of the sheet.
