Iława sits at the southern end of Lake Jeziorak, the longest lake in Poland. The lake stretches north for many kilometres through the forests of Warmia-Masuria. Water shapes the town more than any street plan. The smaller Mały Jeziorak lies within the town itself, so the centre is wrapped around a sheet of water.
The streets follow the shorelines. The old core occupies the land between the lakes, and newer districts spread out along the approach roads. Railway lines cross the area on their own long curves, and forest presses in from several directions. In black and white the shorelines give the map strong outlines and plenty of open space.
