Imerimandroso lies on the north-eastern side of Lake Alaotra, in Madagascar's Alaotra-Mangoro region. The lake is the largest in the country and sits in a broad, flat basin ringed by hills. On a map, the town is a modest cluster of streets between the higher ground and the wetlands that stretch toward the water.
The Alaotra basin is one of Madagascar's most important rice-growing areas, and paddies cover much of the land around the lake. The reed beds and marshes along the shore are also the only home of the Alaotra gentle lemur.
