Iserlohn lies on the northern edge of the Sauerland, where the Ruhr valley meets wooded hills. Iserlohn was historically an industrial town, known for metalworking, wire and needle making, and later for its hill-country setting. The town is also known for its ice hockey club, the Iserlohn Roosters.
