Ishikari lies on the coast north of Sapporo, and its map is dominated by where a great river meets the sea. The Ishikari River, one of the longest in Japan, makes its final bends here before entering Ishikari Bay, leaving a sandbar, old channels and wetlands along the way. Along the coast, a long sandy beach runs in a smooth curve, backed by coastal forest.
The city combines very different landscapes. Near the river mouth is the older settlement, historically tied to fishing and river trade.
