Issoire is a town in Puy-de-Dôme, in the Auvergne, on the Allier river south of Clermont-Ferrand. It is known for the abbey church of Saint-Austremoine, one of the great Romanesque churches of the region. In more recent times it has become known for aerospace metallurgy and as a major gliding centre.
From above, the old town is easy to spot. It is an almost circular core of narrow streets surrounded by a ring of boulevards that follows the line of the old fortifications. Around it, newer neighbourhoods, industrial zones and the airfield spread outward, while the Allier curves along the east side of town.
