Itupiranga is in southeastern Pará, on the Tocantins River, downstream from Marabá. The river is wide here, and from above it dominates the map. The town is a compact cluster of streets along the bank, with roads leading inland across a landscape of pasture, farmland and remaining forest.
The Tocantins is one of Brazil's major rivers, and settlements along this stretch have long depended on it for transport, fishing and trade. Downstream, the river widens into the large Tucuruí reservoir. The region has changed considerably in recent decades as roads and farming expanded into what was once continuous forest.
