Izluchinsk lies in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, in the oil-producing region of Western Siberia, not far from Nizhnevartovsk. Its name echoes the Russian word for a river bend. From above, the settlement is compact and clearly planned, with apartment blocks arranged in regular groups and wide streets between them.
The surrounding landscape is the West Siberian lowland: flat, wet and scattered with lakes, marshes and winding river channels.
