Jarosław sits on high ground above the San River in south-eastern Poland. The old town is laid out around a large rectangular market square, with streets running out from its corners in a regular pattern typical of medieval Polish towns. From above, that orderly core stands out clearly from the more curving roads that follow the edge of the escarpment.
The town grew rich as a trading centre and was once known for its large fairs, which drew merchants from across the region. Its arcaded Orsetti House on the market square is one of the best-known Renaissance townhouses in Poland. Below the old town, a network of historic cellars and passages has been opened as an underground route.
