Jataúba is a municipality in the agreste of Pernambuco, the transitional zone between the humid coast and the dry sertão of north-eastern Brazil. The landscape around it is semi-arid, with low vegetation, scattered farms and seasonal watercourses, and the town is a compact settlement at the centre of a large rural area.
From above, the town's streets form short blocks around a central area, with roads leaving towards neighbouring municipalities. Beyond them, the country opens up quickly: dirt roads, field boundaries and the faint lines of streams that run only after rain.
