Jatiwangi lies in Majalengka Regency in West Java, on the lowland plain between the volcanic highlands and the northern coast. From above, the town is a cluster of streets along the main road, surrounded by rice fields, village settlements and small waterways that run in straight and gently curving lines across the flat land.
The town is well known in Indonesia for its clay roof tiles, or genteng, produced in many small kilns and factories around the area for generations. That tradition has also inspired the Jatiwangi Art Factory, a community arts initiative that works with the local clay culture.
