Jiaozuo lies in north-western Henan, where the flat plain north of the Yellow River meets the southern edge of the Taihang Mountains. The map reflects this meeting point: a regular grid of streets across the lowland, and to the north a line of hills where development gives way to steep, open terrain.
The city grew as a coal-mining centre, and its road network shows the planning of an industrial town, with long east to west avenues and districts laid out in blocks. The wider municipality includes Yuntai Mountain, known for its gorges and waterfalls, and Chenjiagou village in Wen County, widely regarded as the birthplace of Chen-style tai chi.
