Joda lies in Keonjhar district in northern Odisha, close to the Jharkhand border, in one of India's most important iron and manganese ore belts. The surrounding country is hilly and forested, and the town's layout reflects both the terrain and the mining industry that sustains it.
From above, Joda is not a single compact centre but a group of settlements, including residential colonies, market streets and industrial sites, linked by roads and railway lines. Rail sidings serve the mines, and they appear on the map as long, deliberate strokes through an otherwise irregular landscape.
