Joinville is the largest city in Santa Catarina. It lies between the forested slopes of the Serra do Mar and the calm waters of Babitonga Bay. It was founded in 1851 by German, Swiss and Norwegian immigrants, and the centre still follows the old colony plan, with streets laid out along the valleys and the Cachoeira River.
The river winds through the heart of the city before opening into the bay's wetlands and mangroves. To the west the streets end against steep green hills. Industrial districts and residential neighbourhoods spread across the flat land in between, giving the map a varied texture.
Joinville has a notable claim in the arts. It is home to the only school of the Bolshoi Ballet outside Russia, and it hosts a large annual dance festival. A Joinville map poster shows a well-organised southern Brazilian city held between mountain and water.
