Kaisarianí is a municipality in the eastern part of Athens, at the foot of Mount Hymettus. From above, it shows a tight grid of city streets on the lower ground, which gradually gives way to the open slopes of the mountain. The boundary between dense housing and green hillside is one of the clearest lines on the map.
The area grew in the 1920s as a settlement for refugees from Asia Minor, and its history is closely tied to that period and to the resistance during the Second World War, remembered at the Shooting Range memorial. Higher up on Hymettus stands the Byzantine Kaisariani Monastery, surrounded by pine woods.
