Kankakee Map Poster & Print
Kankakee sits on the Kankakee River, about sixty miles south of Chicago, in the flat farm country of north-eastern Illinois. The map is typical of the Midwest: a regular grid of streets and blocks laid over level prairie. The river, winding through the city from east to west, breaks up that geometry with a series of broad curves.
Railways played a large part in the city's growth, and their lines still cross the grid at clean angles. On the river's edge, parks and wooded banks create a soft green margin. Kankakee also has one of Frank Lloyd Wright's early Prairie School houses, the B. Harley Bradley House, which stands close to the river.
A Kankakee map poster sets the orderly grid against the meandering river, a contrast that gives the print its movement. The downtown blocks, the rail corridors and the long straight roads heading out into the cornfields combine into a clear, very Midwestern composition.

Prairie grid
The streets form an even grid of square blocks across flat ground. The pattern extends to the edge of the frame in every direction.
Rail corridors
Railway lines cut through the city at firm angles, and they show how important rail was to Kankakee's growth as a regional centre.
