Kannapolis grew up around Cannon Mills, a textile company that at one time made more towels and sheets than almost anyone in the world. The mill town was built by the company, with rows of worker houses and a downtown at its centre. After the mills closed in 2003, the old mill site was redeveloped as the North Carolina Research Campus.
On the map, the former mill area and the research campus sit at the centre, with neighbourhoods of mill houses around them in small, regular blocks. Further out, the pattern loosens into curving suburban streets and subdivisions. Lake Kannapolis appears to the west, and Interstate 85 cuts along the eastern side of the city.
