Kaoma lies in the Western Province of Zambia, on the main road that links Lusaka with Mongu and the Barotse floodplain. From above, the town is compact. A handful of main streets cross near the road, and residential areas spread out on the flat, sandy ground, with bush and farmland beyond.
The district is the heartland of the Nkoya people, and Kaoma hosts the annual Kazanga ceremony, a traditional gathering of music, dance and ritual that draws visitors from across Zambia. The surrounding landscape is gently undulating woodland on Kalahari sands, crossed by streams that drain toward larger rivers.
