Kathmandu fills much of a broad valley in the Himalayan foothills, surrounded by green ridges on every side. The Bagmati River flows along the southern and eastern edge of the city, and the Vishnumati joins it from the north. The old town sits between the two rivers. The Ring Road circles the city and part of neighbouring Lalitpur.
At the heart of the old town is Kathmandu Durbar Square, with its temples and royal palace buildings. Nearby are the narrow lanes of Thamel. The valley is scattered with sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Swayambhunath stands on a hill to the west, Pashupatinath lies on the Bagmati, and the great stupa of Boudhanath is to the northeast.
