Kavaratti is a small, low coral island in the Lakshadweep archipelago, off the south-west coast of India. From above it is long and narrow, with the open sea on one side and a shallow lagoon behind the reef on the other. There is very little elevation, so the map is almost entirely about the edge between land, lagoon and ocean.
The island is the administrative capital of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Its settlement follows the length of the island, with a road running along the spine and lanes branching off between coconut groves toward the shore. Buildings thin out toward the tips, where the land narrows to sand.
A Kavaratti map poster shows the lagoon as a broad, calm shape beside the island, bounded by the line of the reef. Beyond it is deep water. Because the land is so small, the print has a lot of open space around the coast, and the proportions of the coral island come through clearly.
