Khao Wong is a district in Kalasin province in northeastern Thailand, the region known as Isan. The district town is modest in size. On a map it forms a small cluster of streets around a main road, with a market area, temple grounds and school compounds as the larger blocks. Houses stretch out along the roads leading away from the centre.
Around the town the land opens into rice paddies, which show up as a fine patchwork of small field plots, with wooded upland further out. Ponds and reservoirs are common in this part of Isan.
