Khedbrahma is in Sabarkantha district in northern Gujarat, close to the border with Rajasthan. The town takes its name from its temple to Brahma, one of the few in India dedicated to the creator god, and it has long been a place of pilgrimage. From above, the older streets gather tightly near the centre, and newer areas spread outward along the roads.
The town sits in the foothills of the Aravalli range, one of the oldest mountain systems in India. The ground is broken by low hills and seasonal watercourses, and this shows in the street layout: there is little regularity, and roads bend to follow the land. Farmland and scrub fill the land between the hills.
